CHAPTERS IN ACTION

Florida Zeta Members of the Florida Zeta Chapter help clean up their sponsored highway in the Tallahassee area.
The Florida Zeta Chapter at Florida State University had a very active year. In the fall 2013 semester, their first event included participation in the FSU Social Sciences Fair where they set up an information booth and learned how to get more than just a degree through their experiences at the university.  The chapter also began work with the Ronald McDonald House of Tallahassee.  Members of the chapter helped prepare for an annual fundraising event.  Through their involvement with the Ronald McDonald House, the chapter attended the St. Mark's Stone Crab Festival where they helped serve refreshments, provided valet services, and handed out informational pamphlets.  In the Spring 2014 semester the chapter participated in FSU's annual philanthropic event, The Big Event, in which the chapter helped pick up trash around the community.  They also provided advertising for the Justin Sisson 5K through Students for America's Military.  The 5K is a charity event for a scholarship foundation in honor of a fallen veteran who graduated from FSU in 2012 and went on to serve as an Army officer.  Chapter members also volunteered to help students sign up to become blood marrow donors on behalf of the Kid's 1st Blood Marrow Drive.  The chapter also collected donations for Downtown Tallahassee to benefit the homeless community.  Their final event of the spring involved helping with art projects, mural painting, and earth education at the Green Arts Festival in honor of earth day.  Ongoing efforts include food pantry collections and participation in the Florida Adopt A Highway program.  Dr. Robert Crew is the chapter sponsor.

The Kansas Theta Chapter at Newman University held its initiation ceremony on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at the Dugan Library and Campus Center.  The ceremony was held on the second floor Tarsicia Roths, ASC Alumni Center.  The center provided a lovely setting for the event and features a formal lounge with fireplace and views to the balcony overseeing the Newman's Founders Plaza of Newman University.  Pizza and cake were served.  Chapter sponsor and Pi Gamma Mu International President, Dr. Larry Heck, along with student officers, Alex Prine (president), Sara Schaller (vice president), and Lauren Baker (vice president) officiated.  The ceremony included guest speaker, Dr. Suzanne Rupp, executive director of Pi Gamma Mu.  Dr. Rupp provided a presentation on the history and benefits of
membership in Pi Gamma Mu.

Kent State University in Kent, OH.
The Ohio Eta chapter at Kent State University hosted several events this year including their annual bowling event, a silent auction, and a baggo tournament.  Each event helps the chapter raise funds for service projects and awards and initiation ceremonies.  The baggo tournament is a competition and potluck fundraising event which is held every fall to welcome incoming students and catch up with current students.  Service projects include supply drives for the local battered women's shelter, a humane society drive, book drives, and volunteering at the local food bank.  The newest event was the first annual North East Ohio Sociology Symposium.  This event was held at Kent State University on March 1, 2014 and was open to undergraduate students at universities and colleges all over Northeastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania; however students from as far as North Carolina came to participate.  It was a conference designed to highlight undergraduate research and is the only one in the region.  Over 25 schools were represented and there were over 170 attendees at the event.  Dr. Clare Stacey is the chapter sponsor; chapter president is Brooke L. Long, M.A.

La. Kappa Louisiana Kappa Chapter holds its induction ceremony in April, 2014.
The Louisiana Kappa Chapter at the University of New Orleans held its induction ceremony and program in April 2104.  Chapter sponsor, Dr. James McAllister, officiated and reported that the ceremony was a big success.
