MEMBERSHIP IN PI GAMMA MU OPENS DOORS FOR MEMBER OF THE NEW YORK IOTA CHAPTERViviana DeCohen joined the New York Iota Chapter at Mercy College on May 6, 2016. She recently wrote to Pi Gamma Mu headquarters to share how being a member of the Society has encouraged and pushed her to greater heights. DeCohen applied and become a McNair Scholar at the College. The Mercy College McNair Scholars Program began in 1995 and targets low-income, first-generation students and those who are from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The purpose of the program is to provide enriching experiences that prepare eligible students for doctoral study. DeCohen went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Health Management from Mercy College. Since graduating, DeCohen has been given the distinct pleasure of developing a Health program for seniors in Westchester County, New York and is thrilled that Mercy College, the home of her Pi Gamma Mu Chapter, hosted the program on June 6. The program included a Keynote Speaker, Donna M. Butts, Executive Director of Generations United. Her speech was entitled, "Reaching Across Generations: Building a Longer, Stronger Life". The program also included several workshops, breakfast, and lunch. Ms. DeCohen wishes to share with her fellow members of Pi Gamma Mu how her Mentor and Chapter Faculty Sponsor, Dr. Dorothy Balancio, "has opened doors within me, allowing me to represent such an organization. I will forever aspire to the excellence of Pi Gamma Mu". She encourages all members of Pi Gamma Mu to take advantage of the mentoring and networking opportunities available through membership in the Society.
