The mission of Pi Gamma Mu is to encourage and promote excellence in the social sciences and to uphold the ideals of scholarship and service.

2017 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

After much deliberation on the part of the Pi Gamma Mu Awards Committee, the committee's chairperson, Dr. Clara Small, recommended 12 scholarship winners to the Board of Trustees. The board awarded the scholarships to the following lifetime members of Pi Gamma Mu:

selvaggiThe $2000 Carroll Parish Scholarship was awarded to Jacqueline Selvaggi. Selvaggi is a member of the New York Lambda Chapter at Saint Thomas Aquinas College where she earned a B.S. in Psychology. She is attending graduate school at the University of South Carolina where she is studying Social Work. Dr. Heath Bowen is the Faculty Chapter Sponsor of the New York Lambda Chapter. BartelsAlexandria Bartels is the recipient of the $2000 Marvel Stockwell Scholarship. Bartels earned a Bachelor's degree from Wayne State College in 2017 and is a member of the Nebraska Delta Chapter at the College. She is currently a full-time first year student at the University of Nebraska College of Law with an expected graduation date of May 2020. Dr. Randy Bertolas and Dr. Jean Karlen are the Co-Sponsors of the Nebraska Delta Chapter.
ElmoreThe $2000 Effie B. Urquhart Scholarship was awarded to John Elmore III. Elmore was inducted into the Alabama Delta Chapter at Troy University. He earned a B.S. degree in Anthropology at Troy in 2017. Elmore is attending graduate school at the University of West Florida. Professor Sue Ellen Weeks is the Faculty Chapter Sponsor of the Alabama Delta Chapter. HousemanThe Daniel E. Quigley Scholarship of $1000 was awarded to Catherine Houseman. Houseman is a member of the District of Columbia Alpha Chapter at Catholic University of America where she earned a bachelor's degree in Politics. She is currently enrolled at Temple University James E. Beasley School of Law. Dr. Sandra Barrueco is the Faculty Chapter Sponsor of the DC Alpha Chapter.
TamasyDavid Tamasy was the recipient of the Gordon E. Mercer Scholarship of $1000. Tamasy was inducted into the Pennsylvania Alpha Kappa Chapter at the University of Pittsburgh – Greensburg where he earned a B. A. in History and Political Sciences. He is currently attending law school at Duquesne University in Pennsylvania. Dr. Geoffrey Wood is the Faculty Chapter Sponsor of the Pennsylvania Alpha Kappa Chapter.

The following were awarded $1000 Pi Gamma Mu scholarships:

NaborsBrandon Nabors was inducted into Pi Gamma Mu through the Illinois Pi Chapter at McKendree University. He is currently attending graduate school at McKendree where he is working on a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Dr. J. L. Kemp is the Chapter Faculty Sponsor of the Illinoi Pi Chapter. NardiGeorge Nardi is a member of the Illinois Xi Chapter at Elmhurst College. He is currently attending graduate school at Northwestern University in Illinois. Karen Musser if the Chapter Sponsor of the Illinois Xi Chapter.
GreenZachary Green joined Pi Gamma Mu through the West Virginia Theta Chapter at Bluefield State College where he earned a B.A. degree in Social Science. Green is pursuing a law degree at Elon University School of Law in North Carolina. Dr. Amanda Willey is the Chapter Faculty Sponsor of the West Virginia Theta Chapter. WilbarSierra Wilbar is a member of the Colorado Epsilon Chapter at Colorado College where her focus was on Southwest Studies. Wilbar is attending graduate school at Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin in Ireland. Her are of study is Race, Ethnicity, and Conflict. Dr. Dana Wittmer is the Chapter Faculty Sponsor of the Colorado Epsilon Chapter.
TurianoEvan Turiano was initiated into Pi Gamma Mu through the Connecticut Alpha Chapter at Trinity College where Turiano earned a Bachelor's degree in 2016. He is seeking a Ph.D. in history at the City University of New York. Dr. Nicholas Wooley is the Chapter Faculty Sponsor of the Connecticut Alpha Chapter. LeclercChelsea Leclerc was inducted into the Massachusetts Delta Chapter at Wheelock College. Leclerc earned a Bachelor of Social Work degree at Wheelock in 2017. She is enrolled in graduate school at the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Jenne Powers is the Chapter Faculty Sponsor of the Massachusetts Delta Chapter.
FruehanAllison Fruehan joined Pi Gamma Mu through the Pennsylvania Alpha Eta Chapter at Marywood University. She earned a B.S. in Psychology with a minor in Sociology at Marywood in 2016. Fruehan is currently enrolled as a Master's student in the Ed.S. School Psychology program at Marywood. Dr. Adam Shprintzen is the Faculty Chapter Sponsor of the Pennsylvania Alpha Eta Chapter.
