THE ROLE OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES IN THE FUTURE

altMark Mabry, Jr.
Student Representative, International Board of Trustees
As a new semester approaches, the budding social scientist may find it worthwhile to pause and reflect on their academic field of choice. Pi Gamma Mu, as an international honor society for the social sciences, certainly finds the pursuit of academic excellence within this field to be not only worthwhile but to be vitally important for the future of the international community.

THE PRESIDENT'S VIEW

Heck"The check is in the mail." That phrase usually makes me smile, as I think about both the promise and the problematic potential. However, now as I think of it, I have a special reason to smile, and my thought is more about the promise. That is because the check I am specifically thinking about is the Pi Gamma Mu scholarship check written for ten lifetime Pi Gamma Mu members. The phrase, "The check is in the mail," came to mind when Suzanne Rupp, our Executive Director, recently reported to the Trustees that the scholarship checks are prepared for mailing.

CONGRATULATIONS, STAR CHAPTERS!

StarBecome a Pi Gamma Mu Star Chapter by increasing your chapter’s number of new initiates by 20% or more as compared to the previous academic year.

Increasing your chapter’s membership helps Pi Gamma Mu accomplish its mission to encourage and recognize superior scholarship by extending the benefits of membership to more eligible students.  It is the collection of the lifetime membership fees from new members that sustains Pi Gamma Mu and we ask for your continued support in this area.  Increasing membership will also benefit more of the high performing students at your school with opportunities for scholarships, publications, networking, and more.  Increase your chapter’s number of new initiates by 20% or more as compared to the previous academic year and we will send you a Pi Gamma Mu Star plaque and will recognize your chapter in the Pi Gamma Mu Newsletter and on our website.  Our fiscal year ends on August 31.

SEEKING NEW CHAPTERS

Pi Gamma Mu is seeking to charter new chapters at colleges and universities around the globe and we need your help!  Our mission is to encourage and promote excellence in the social sciences and to uphold the ideals of scholarship and service.  All too often, honor students whose professors do not arrange for their initiation into an honor society receive no recognition at all for their achievement.  Establishing new chapters of Pi Gamma Mu provides that well-deserved recognition.

ACHS MEMBERSHIP PROTECTS THE LEGITIMACY OF HONOR SOCIETIES

Honor SocietyPi Gamma Mu is one of 66 members of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), which is the authority on standards and definitions for the honor society movement. ACHS has stepped up efforts to alert the higher education community to the standards of traditional honor societies. In contrast, some new so-called honor societies exist only online and allow self-nomination, accepting fees with no questions asked. If in doubt about an organization, you can check out the ACHS website (www.achsnatl.org) for the list of honor societies that are members.
