COVID-19 Update for Chapters of Pi Gamma Mu

(Update August 25, 2020)

Following a month-long stay-home order, our office reopened on May 4, 2020.  Shipment of membership certificates and regalia resumed on that date.

Although we all continue to face challenges related to COVID-19, Pi Gamma Mu wishes to offer its support to its members, chapters, and chapter sponsors.  Despite these challenges our mission remains the same, to encourage and promote excellence in the Social Sciences and to uphold and nurture scholarship, leadership, and service.  In order to achieve this mission, we encourage chapters to continue the important work of inviting eligible students to join Pi Gamma Mu so that they get the recognition and opportunities they deserve.

In response to COVID-19 and the increased need for online options, we recently launched a  new online system for membership registration and payments.  This allows chapter sponsors to invite eligible students and permits students to provide registration information and submit lifetime membership fees online.  Due to temporary campus closures, some chapters have begun holding meetings and initiation ceremonies online as well.  The ritual for the induction of new members and the installation of new officers is available on our website at http://pigammamu.org/initiation-ceremony.html.  If you cannot hold a ceremony, you may mail membership certificates to students or hand them out later.

Again, to the degree that you are able, please continue to invite eligible students to join your chapter.  Not only does it provide well-deserved recognition to your top students, but failure to invite students this year can impact next year's scholarship process, students' eligibility to attend the November 2021 Convention, and future recruitment efforts.

We wish you the best as you continue the important work of supporting your students during this difficult time.  Please contact us at 620-221-3128 or [email protected] if there is anything we can do to assist you.

(Update: March 29, 2020)

Due to the temporary Stay Home Order for the state of Kansas, all Pi Gamma Mu staff will begin working from home, until further notice, effective, Monday, March 30, 2020.  We will continue to accept and process new members online and through the mail, although shipment of certificates and regalia (such as honor cords and stoles) will be temporarily delayed.

We encourage you to continue to invite eligible students to join your chapter during this time to the degree that you are able, perhaps using our new online system.    Please know that once we receive a new member's approved registration form and payment, he/she is considered a lifetime member of Pi Gamma Mu and will enjoy the benefits of membership, even if the certificate and induction ceremony are delayed.  We will get back in the office and will begin shipping membership credentials and regalia as soon as is possible and safe again.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.  Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

(Update: March 13, 2020)

As colleges and universities around the globe continue to respond to rapidly changing circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, Pi Gamma Mu wishes to offer its support to its members, chapters, and chapter sponsors.

To the degree possible, we encourage chapters to continue the important work of inviting eligible students to join Pi Gamma Mu so that they get the recognition and opportunities they deserve.  Some chapters are using more electronic invitations as campuses move to online classes.  A membership application form is available on our website and can be attached to an email invitation.  Please be assured that, at this time, Pi Gamma Mu headquarters remains fully staffed and will continue to fulfill your chapter's requests for new member certificates and regalia.

Regarding initiation ceremonies, please follow your institution's guidelines regarding events and gatherings.  If you are unable to host a face-to-face initiation ceremony, instead of canceling your ceremony, consider holding an online initiation ceremony.  Online applications like Google Hangouts or Zoom work well.

Not only does it provide well-deserved recognition to your top students, but failure to invite students this spring can impact next year's scholarship process, students' eligibility to attend the November 2020 Convention, and future recruitment efforts.  If you are not able to induct students this semester, we encourage you to begin inviting students again as soon as you are able.

We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and provide updates as circumstances warrant.

We wish you the best as you continue the important work of supporting your students during this difficult time.  Please contact us at 620-221-3128 or [email protected] if there is anything we can do to assist you.
