Pi Gamma Mu's Statement Against Racial Injustice and All Forms of Discrimination

May 11, 2021

As social scientists, we are keenly aware of the pain and anguish systemic racism has caused so many individuals for so many centuries.

Many scholars have argued the recent conviction in Minneapolis regarding the murder of Mr. George Floyd will be a turning point for the United States and the world as we work to change the toxic environment of systemic racism.

In short, we want to be part of the solution.  We appreciate that our colleagues and community members are part of the conversation through the listening, learning, and understanding of those who are oppressed and mistreated.  We must work to end systemic racism that lurks in the administration and enforcement of countless policies and also in societal culture.

We ask our fellow global citizens, students, and colleagues to join us as we stand together working to eradicate this centuries-old issue that continues to taint peace, justice, and prosperity. Together we can work to change this for the better.

The Trustees of Pi Gamma Mu have established the Lectureship and Chapter Events Fund for the purpose of advancing the social sciences and researching and eliminating all forms of discrimination.  Funds may be used by chapters in the following two ways: 1) to bring a specially qualified speaker to campus for a chapter event, or 2) to help cover expenses related to a chapter hosting a scholarship based-event for students.  The Fund serves as a memorial to deceased Trustees of this honor society.   The Trustees encourage chapters to apply.

STATEMENT AGAINST HATE CRIMES AND RACISM AFFECTING ASIAN, ASIAN AMERICAN, AND PACIFIC ISLANDER (AAPI) COMMUNITIES

Pi Gamma Mu condemns the ongoing and intensifying racism and subsequent hate crimes we have witnessed against the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. The AAPI community has long been scapegoated and marginalized in the wake of toxic fearmongering. Racism and hate crimes have no place in a progressive, civilized society.

Social justice and the respect for diversity are cornerstones of Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social Sciences. It is vital that we speak out against the dramatic rise in racist and xenophobic violence directed against the AAPI community.  As social scientists, we believe that all people should be treated with dignity and respect. We stand in solidarity with all who are the victims of violence, discrimination, and racism.

To the AAPI community: we see you. We acknowledge the trauma and pain that accompanies oppression in all its forms. We pledge to work with vigilance towards the eradication of systemic racism.

As social scientists, we are deeply saddened by the horrific and blatant injustices many Americans have been experiencing, especially the unacceptable incidents of police brutality against Black people. While our words cannot take away the pain, we want our members to know that we stand unified and condemn all forms of discrimination.

We especially stand behind our friends in the Black community in these paramount endeavors for social change and public safety measures that would require all people to be treated with dignity and respect.

Diversity is an integral part of Pi Gamma Mu's fabric and is the essence of our Society. As an interdisciplinary honor society, we value and appreciate different social science disciplines and celebrate their individual contributions to academia and the greater community.

We hope that all of our members will become part of the dialogue looking to find new ways to mend these serious and devastating societal inequalities and injustices - so that we may emerge stronger and change society for the better.
