PAST ΠΓΜ PRESIDENT, JEAN KARLEN, INDUCTED INTO PI GAMMA MU HALL OF FAME

Karlen
Dr. Jean Karlen

The 14th International President of Pi Gamma Mu, Dr. Jean Karlen, was inducted into the Pi Gamma Mu Hall of Fame at the annual meeting of the International Board of Trustees in September of 2015.  Karlen served as the President of the society from 2002 to 2005 and currently serves on the Board as a Past-President.  Previous roles include Chancellor of the North Central Region (1985-1990; 1993-1996) and First Vice President (1996-2002).  Karlen has chaired several Pi Gamma Mu committees over the years including the Convention Committee, Student Paper Sessions Committee, Publications Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee, and the Executive Committee.  As chair of the Convention Committee, Karlen has helped plan numerous Pi Gamma Mu Triennial Conventions including its first in 1987 and now the 11th one which will be held in Kansas City, MO in November of 2017.  Her current work on the board also includes developing the society’s strategic plan for the future, updating its constitution, and creating bylaws for the society.

Karlen joined the faculty at Wayne State College in Nebraska in 1976.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in 1969, a master’s degree in 1976, and a Ph.D. in 1981 all from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  Karlen served as division head of Social Sciences at Wayne State from 1989 to 2001 and as Service-Learning campus coordinator from 1999 to 2010. She is currently Professor Emeritus and continues to remain active on campus. She still serves as a co-sponsor of the Nebraska Delta Chapter at Wayne State College, a chapter she worked to reactivate in 1978. She has helped initiate hundreds of deserving students into lifetime membership over the years and sponsored student presenters at every convention since 1990. The Wayne State Delta Chapter has consistently appeared on Pi Gamma Mu’s honor rolls.

Karlen has received many awards and honors in her career.  In 2003, she received the Nebraska State College System George T. Rebensdorf Teaching Excellence Award.  She received the Midwest Consortium for Service-Learning in Higher Education Voyager Award in 2006 for outstanding commitment to furthering service-learning and the Midwest Sociological Society Board of Directors Distinguished Service Award in 2000.  Karlen’s career and 38 year history of volunteerism with Pi Gamma Mu demonstrates a commitment to education, rural communities, women’s issues, and her students, many of whom have gone on to complete master and doctoral degrees in a variety of fields.

The Pi Gamma Mu Hall of Fame was started in 2004, when the International Board of Trustees decided that it is right and proper to formally recognize some of Pi Gamma Mu’s leading volunteers, who truly poured their heart and soul into this organization.  Pi Gamma Mu has been a labor of love for its many volunteers, including international officers and trustees and the chapter sponsors who are the backbone of the society.  While all of our volunteers over the past nine decades are deserving of acclaim for giving of themselves in the service of the society, some stand out.  Jean Karlen is one of those outstanding volunteers.  If you would like to congratulate her on her many accomplishments including her induction into this exclusive Hall of Fame, please email her at [email protected]
