LIFETIME MEMBERSHIPS ENHANCED WITH THE HELP OF ADVANCING TECHNOLOGY

The Pi Gamma Mu international honor society has always provided lifetime memberships for members, but rapid changes in our technology have enabled Pi Gamma Mu staff and board members to communicate with lifetime members for the first time in our history.  During recent years, online newsletter subscriptions going to lifetime members have been substantially expanded.  Our recent "Pi Gamma Mu Directory" provided opportunities for lifetime members to stay in touch with each other and helped expand our Listserv communication system, as well as expand newsletter availability to life-time members.  For the first time, a significant number of alumni members attended our last convention, and we have created structures to deal with new expectations.

In 2011, the Pi Gamma Mu Alumnus Council was formed at the Pi Gamma Mu triennial international convention in the Washington, D. C., metropolitan area.  The Alumnus Council is co-chaired by Sheilah Moyle, budget analyst at Western Carolina University, and Nilda Pyronneau, a former student representative on our Pi Gamma Mu Board of Trustees.  Pi Gamma Mu alumni met at the convention and have since held electronic discussions.  Discussions demonstrate the important role alumni can play in helping establish chapters at nearby universities, present research papers at conventions, attend conventions, and help establish an alumni award to be given at conventions for outstanding accomplishments by alumnus members.  Our renewed abilities to communicate with lifetime members have created a revolution of renewed interest in Pi Gamma Mu by lifetime members. However, the interest of alumni must be channeled in ways that are helpful to lifetime members and enable them to contribute in meaningful ways to Pi Gamma Mu.  While we are moving toward success, our greatest challenges lie ahead.

In order to keep discussions going, Pi Gamma Mu is holding an alumni discussion and roundtable at the 2014 triennial international convention and would like to invite Pi Gamma Mu alumni to participate.  The convention will be held on October 16 - 18 in Charleston, S.C.  The alumni discussion is scheduled for 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, as follows:

Roundtable Discussion Leaders:

Sheilah Moyle, Budget Analyst, Western Carolina University

Nilda Pyronneau, Crisis Intervention Counselor, Division of Family Guidance, and Past Pi Gamma Mu Board Member Student Trustee
Dr. Gordon Mercer, Immediate Past President, Pi Gamma Mu.

Others who have been helpful with the Pi Gamma Mu Alumnus Council include Dr. Lloyd Johnson, Patricia McGlothen, Dr. Matthew Anderson and Dr. Suzanne Rupp.
