Professor Eliseo De Guzman
Pi Gamma Mu's Governor for the Philippines
Eliseo De Guzman is a professor of demography and social science in the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines, from which he retired upon reaching the compulsory age, after rendering forty-four (44) years in the government service. A recipient of both the U.P. Department and College Outstanding Professor awards, he also held the professorial chair awards for excellence in the teaching of demography and of social sciences for several years. He taught for some time as a U.P. professional lecturer after his retirement.
He took his doctoral studies (public administration) and M.A. studies (demography) at the University of the Philippines under full scholarships (University of the Philippines faculty grant and Ford Foundation fellowship, respectively). He majored in educational administration and supervision for his Master of Arts in Education. He finished his basic education course from the Philippine Normal College (now Philippine Normal University), Magna Cum Laude, equivalent. He passed the government Civil Service Examination for teachers while still a first-year education student.
Prof. De Guzman is a member of the international honor societies of Pi Gamma Mu and Phi Kappa Phi. He has served as an officer of both Philippine chapters in various capacities, 23 years in Pi Gamma Mu. In 2020, Dr. C. Laurence (Larry) Heck, President of the Board of Trustees of Pi Gamma Mu, appointed Prof. De Guzman to the position of Governor of the Philippines for Pi Gamma Mu. The position was previously filled by Prof. Ofelia Regala Angangco (1926-2019) of the University of the Philippines.
Prof. De Guzman has written numerous published and unpublished monographs, chapters, and articles on demography, population and development, and related areas. Some of these were published by the United Nations, International Statistical Institute, Netherlands, CICRED, and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, The University of Singapore
He received awards from different government and non-government organizations in recognition of his outstanding achievements. To mention a few: as a student (Most Outstanding Student of the Year - PNU, Model Citizen - Philippine Institute of Public Opinion); as a teacher (Most Outstanding Teacher - City of Manila); as a researcher (Chancellor Award for Outstanding Publication [one of the authors] - U.P., research paper published in a special volume by the University of Singapore); as an extension worker (Outstanding service for conduct of the first demographic survey in the city and conceptualizing a city data management system - City of Mandaluyong, Outstanding service - Commission on Population ).
He remains active in the PGM Philippine Alpha Chapter (U.P.) and, as the Chair, in the Board of Directors of NOMUCO Multi-Purpose Cooperative which he founded in 1995. He lives in Caloocan City, Metro Manila, Philippines with his wife.
